Born in New Rochelle, New York, CL Smooth emerged as one of hip-hop’s most respected lyricists and storytellers. His career took off when he met producer Pete Rock through their mutual friend, the late Heavy D. Together, Pete Rock & CL Smooth became one of the most celebrated duos in hip-hop, creating timeless records that defined the golden era of the 1990s. Their 1992 classic “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” stands as one of the most iconic and emotional songs in the genre’s history.
As a solo artist, CL Smooth has continued to build on that legacy, blending sharp lyricism with soulful authenticity. His music bridges generations, resonating with longtime fans and new listeners alike. Over the years, he has collaborated with a wide range of legendary artists including Johnny Gill, Mike Bivins, Teddy Riley, Run DMC, Heavy D, Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, BJ the Chicago Kid, Raekwon, Skyzoo, and Spice One. Internationally, he has also worked with the late Japanese producer Nujabes, further cementing his global reach and cultural influence.
